XP, the version before VX, does a lot of things differently than VX and is more widely supported. VX Ace does everything VX does, plus a lot more. The only version I would suggest avoiding at this time is VX. It may mean you're picking up XP for $3 from Humble Bundle in two months. Sales tend to happen 2-4 times a year through various sources - Steam directly and Humble Bundle being the biggest sources, though other sources or buying direct will sometimes have sales too. VX Ace is likely to drop to the $10-15 range, and the others will be in the $1-5 range, when they go on sale. MV has historically dropped to the $20-30 range, and with MZ out will likely move to the $15-25 range. If you are in a position where you need to wait for a sale, historically VX Ace and MV waited a year or two before they dropped more than 50% in price. If this means you are in a position where you can drop $80 USD on MZ, then get MZ. If you do not own RPGMaker, then the best version to use is the latest version you can afford. The best version of RPGMaker to use is the one you already own.
